Read about March's Member Spotlights, Megan Shea of Apex Parks, Recreation, & Cultural Resources.

Special Events Specialist
Apex Parks, Recreation, & Cultural Resources
Megan Shea coordinates a wide range of public events each year, from cultural programs to large-scale festivals serving thousands. In just a year and a half in her role and in the parks and recreation field, she has already established herself as a leader who balances creativity with strategy. Her work includes managing vendors, performers, contracts, timelines, and on-site teams, all while collaborating across departments to ensure what she describes as “seamless execution.”
Megan’s path into the profession began at the NC State Student Union, where being surrounded by events sparked her interest in planning. That interest quickly grew into a passion as she gained hands-on experience creating high-energy experiences that bring people together. She shares that she “fell in love with how impactful this work can be,” especially when it creates meaningful opportunities for connection and belonging. Her colleague, Lisa Raschke, affirms that “Megan brings creativity and strategy to her role,” leading town-wide programs and cultural initiatives that strengthen community connection across Apex.

That impact is especially evident through her Women’s History Month initiatives. In 2025, Megan launched the Game Makers Showcase, featuring an all-female game designer panel, including Heather Chandler, former producer for Fortnite. Middle and high school students pitched original game ideas and received professional feedback in an environment designed to uplift and inspire. After the event, a grandmother shared that it was the first time her autistic grandchild had ever been publicly celebrated for their talents, a powerful reminder of how inclusive programming can create life-changing moments. This year, Megan continues that momentum with Tees and Teas, a Women’s History Month series featuring golf clinics with women’s college golf teams and an evening tea experience highlighting local women-owned businesses and hands-on jewelry making. Through intentional, empowering programming, Megan is not only celebrating women’s contributions but creating spaces where the entire community feels seen and valued. And outside of event season, she is also the proud owner of an orange cat named Franklin.
