Happy fall,

First, I would like to remind you of the Wellness Webinar on Wednesday, November 19th, at 11:30am. Teresa Penbrooke, PhD student and research assistant at NC State University will be presenting “Reducing Obesity One Community at a Time through Systematic Assessment and Action.” Teresa is currently heavily involved with GP RED, originally known as GreenPlay Research, Education and Development. The mission of GP RED is to facilitate the creation of innovated and practical management tools and strategies to enhance and promote integration of health, recreation, and land management industries through research, education and development. Additionally, Teresa has substantial experience and expertise when it comes to producing projects for large and small communities. The holiday season officially kicks off with Thanksgiving next week. While planning your work and family holiday activities, keep in mind there are plenty of options to continue to eat healthy and stay active. In-fact, the Eat Smart, Move More NC: Maintain, don’t Gain! Holiday Challengeoffers a free, seven-week challenge providing participants tips, tricks, and ideas to maintain your weight throughout the holiday season. Eat Smart, Move More states the average American gains between 1 and 5 pounds each Holiday season, and some people never manage to lose those extra pounds.

So how can you challenge your community to eat healthier and stay active during the holiday season? It all can begin with parks and recreation departments taking the initiative and becoming a role model for the community. One option is to set up a health and wellbeing group within the department. The members can facilitate educational sessions for the department, including healthy eating and staying active during the next couple months. The collaboration of healthy recipes, tips, and ideas will benefit your department and ultimately extend to the community. Departmental members can convey healthy information to the community which will health awareness, such as motivating people to register for holiday walks & runs, or participating in healthy food fundraising for those who cannot afford a holiday meal. Don’t forget encourage your departments and community to register for the free Holiday Challenge! The challenge will be beneficial and provide tips for a healthier Thanksgiving, managing holiday stress, fitting physical activity into a busy day, healthy holiday recipes and more! Be part of and share the holiday challenge, and think of how great you will feel once January 1st, 2015 comes around.
