Happy Monday!

This bulletin will be a bit different. As I continue my graduate work at NC State, I cannot help but notice the similarities of my research in-connection with my work for the NCRPA Wellness Initiative. Currently I finished an informative book calledRestorative Commons: Creating Health and Well-being through Urban Landscapes, edited by Lindsay Campbell and Ann Wiesen.

This book discusses how the world’s population has shifted to more urban than rural. Because of the population shift, it has increased the importance offinding opportunities for humans to stay in contact with natural settings. Parks, community gardens, urban gardens, and public housing campuses offer opportunities for restoring both social and health function in urban regions. I felt that this book only reinforces the importance of community gardens and accessible greenways in our community. My current blog expands on this issue, and provides information on creating opportunities for accessible gardens and greenways: http://tinyurl.com/opbcmh7

One last note about National Nutrition Month. Last Monday, Ellen DeGeneres hosted First Lady Michelle Obama on her talk showThe Ellen DeGeneres Show. Michelle went on to explain the #GimmeFive Challenge and how celebrities have been posting on social media the ways they have been leading a healthy life. Ellen and Michelle took center stage and proceeded to dance the official #GimmeFive Dance Challenge. After the dance, Ellen and Michelle challenged people across the nation to learn the dance and post it Ellentube.(Submit:http://ellentube.com/lists/gimmefive/)

NCRPA’s official challenge to all of you is to have your department, family or friends learn the #GimmeFive dance and share it with us and all social media outlets! Post and tag your video with#GimmeFive, #NCRecre8 and @ncrpa and you could win a NCRPA T-shirt !
