Good afternoon!

The National Parks and Recreation Association has announced that $1.8 million dollars in grant funding will be made available to local park and recreation agencies to help support out-of-school time programs. These specific grants will build on the past successes of increasing meals to low income communities and promoting healthy eating and physical activity standards.

So here’s the challenge of how your departments can become involved! Briefly listed are the four main goals of NRPA’s grant in-which your department can become involved with:

1.Increase the number of healthy meals for children in low-income communities.

2.Implement and increase standards of nutrition and physical activity.

3.Create behavior change through nutrition literacy and teaching the importance of healthy eating.

4.Implement strategies and policies to reduce food waste and costs.

This grant provides a lot of potential for your department to become actively involved in supporting our NCRPA mission to increase access to healthy eating and physical activity standards! For more information about how your department can use this grant, please read my blog: http://tinyurl.com/offdd8e

Open Space, NRPA’s official blog, provides details and more information regarding this new grant. The application for grant funding is available online, and must be submitted by March 5, 2015.

One last note, our next Webinar will be on Wednesday, February 25th, from 1:00pm-2:00pm. Scott Knox, from Morrisville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources, will provide general information regarding run groups and setting up 5k races. A great opportunity to learn more about program opportunities and run groups, especially since the NC Recre8 5K is starting to develop!
