Sessions will include: Environmental Education Programs for the Busy, Thrifty and Not-That-Knowledgeable-About-Nature Professional, Innovative Outdoor Programming, and a learning tour of Bass Lake Park and Sugg Farm.

Workshop Schedule

9:30am Session 1: Environmental Education Programs for the Busy, Thrifty and Not-That-Knowledgeable-About-Nature Professional
Katie Spencer, Outdoor Education and Parks Manager, Garner Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources 
Help combat Nature Deficit Disorder by adding environmental programs at your facility. These programs are fun, easy to produce and affordable and will give your participants an opportunity to learn more about the natural world in an outdoor setting. We will look at ways to utilize the resources you currently have to make adding these programs a seamless process.

11:00am Session 2: Innovative Outdoor Programming - Part1 
Stevie McElhaneey, Bass Lake Park Naturalist, Holly Springs Parks and Recreation 
Discuss the innovative outdoor programming that the Bass Lake staff has successfully developed to engage the community and increase visits to the park.

Program ideas include:

  • Geocaching: What is it? Simple caches vs. gadget caches
  • Archery and Air Rifle programs: How to implement
  • Effective workshops and general programs: NC Animals, Lake Dipping, Shiitake mushroom workshops, catch and cook workshops, etc.

12:30pm Lunch

1:15pm Session 2: Innovative Outdoor Programming; Bass Lake Park and Sugg Farm Learning Tour - Part 2

Hike the Bass Lake Park and Sugg Farm to learn how to implement programs discussed.
